Title Design

Image
Welcome back to my blog! My group and I are getting close to filming our final task. This means I get to design our title for the sequence. - The first scene will include credits with the font “chiller” in the middle of the screen. This text will be in a normal to large font size.  -For the credits that are to be embedded in the scenes, some examples of places the words would be located on are knives in a drawer, on a creepy-looking bookshelf, inside a broken floorboard, and when the character looks through a window and it’s on a wall outside the window.  -Possible title: The title for this film will most likely be something like “House of Horrors” -The title will be bolded and in the font “Creepster”. The font color will be a dark red. -The main title will have a slight pulse and then will fade out.  -The title will last about 3-4 seconds while the credits will last 2-3 seconds each.  -The name of the person who did the job will be a font and a half sizes bigger than the job they di

Our Script

Scene 1: -The scene beings with dark lighting. A cat walks by the abandoned horror house to set the spooky and creepy sense of the genre horror. Lola and Olivia suggest going to explore the haunted house down the road for something to do on a late Friday night.  Music beings to play in the background it plays a non-diegetic, yet common sound associated with horror.   -Sabrina: Guys this is a really bad idea. We have always been warned to STAY AWAY! (has a worried tone)  -Michaela: I agree, remember that time John Cameron and Jackson French from 43rd street went In and never came out.  -Lola: Guys calm down we will be fine, loosen up and live a little. -Skeptical but they all walk in. The door slams shut. They all scream.    Scene 2:   -Sabrina runs to open the door and it won’t open; she starts to panic.  -Sabrina: Guys it won’t open (panic in her voice)   -Olivia: ahhhhh, woah. What is this place. (Distracted by the darkness and curiosity of the forbidden haunted house)  -Michaela: s

Planning our Movie Opening!

Image
Film Location: For filming we plan on doing it at Lola’s house, similar to our commercial project. Instead of out on the water in her backyard we planned on using some construction going on near by. This way the setting adds darkness and unease based on location alone. Also it differs from previously used locations.  Backup Plan: If it somehow falls through, our backup plan is to use an empty lot. This gives us space and creativity to do a lot of different things and test any ideas we have. It’s also easily accessible and can we found anywhere making it very plausible. Health and Safety: To keep our group safe we will make sure all safety pro-cautions are taken in any / all filming locations. This means avoiding any possibly dangerous areas that we could get hurt, interacting with strangers since we may be out in public and being aware of our surroundings at all costs. On our way to and from locations we will drive safely, following all traffic laws like wearing a seatbelt and going

Title Research: Slender Man

Image
Hey there, it’s me again. I chose the film Slender Man because it showed a lot of good horror genre strategies in the opening sequence. Using the www.artofthetitle.com I came across plenty of films and easy to access research.
  1. What titles are displayed during the opening sequences? - In the opening sequence, we can first see the studio and company making the movie. We see first “Sony”, then it transitions to “Screen Gems” which is owned by Sony and finally “Mythology Entertainment”.  2. This image though plain, fits with Slender man since he is a mysterious man who lurks in the dark. Title Research: Websites

Image
While researching for my task 3 movie sequence, I came across 2 very helpful websites. The first is called Watch the titles and the second one is called Art of the title. Watch the titles     The website "watch the titles" is a website that can be used to take a more in-depth look at title sequences and how they are made. This website also writes about the background context of most of the title sequences and explains why or why not the title was good.  Within each example, there's an in-depth background on the certain movie or director. Some examples include interviews, descriptions, broken-down title sequences, etc. Interviews are a helpful source since they are personal and can provide a deeper look at the professional artist's thinking. This can aid in my research for my title sequence by adopting a thought process that I may like and putting my own spin on it. This website has an infinite amount of good examples and emerges as a very good resource for research.

Movie Conventions Research: Us

Image
Hey guys welcome back to my blog! In this blog, I want to talk about the movie "Us". The movie "Us" has many elements that I would like to include in my final task. Some of these elements include the props, sounds, lighting, and camera movements, etc that this film incorporated. The movie Us used very dark and mysterious lighting during the scary scenes that I would like to try to recreate in my final task. The lighting plays a huge role in the film and this movie had many good examples of good lighting techniques. The non-diegetic sound was also very well-matched and I would like to incorporate some of this into my final task. That eerie and thrilling music helps set the scene. Overall, lighting and music control a big part of the feeling you get from watching the movie and I would like to use these tactics properly so my viewers can feel that horror as well. Other elements of this movie that I really liked were the very well-executed jump scares throughout the mov

Movie Conventions Research: Hereditary

Image
Hey guys, I’m back at it! I chose the movie Hereditary to research. I chose this movie because it embodies many aspects of the horror genre, which is what my group and I are basing our movie on. Some elements that the movie Hereditary shows is dark lighting and a suspicious setting throughout most of the intense parts of the film. This film also included weapons, bloody makeup, and special effects to enhance the horror aspect. There were also many angles such as close ups on the actors face to show a scary blank stare and high angles to show a lack of power upon a character. On top of this there were also many frightening sound effects such as screeching, screaming, intensifying spine chilling music, etc. All of these elements found in this film worked to produce an extremely scary horror film. Elements found in this movie that I admired was, the use of sound effects to help amplify the story being told. For example, they used sound effects to show that the boy was being possessed whic

Movie Conventions Research: Smile

Image
Hey there! I'm back again and I hope everyone is having a great day! The reason I chose to research the movie smile was due to the fact that it is unsettling, ruthless and thrilling. These are all things in which follow the conventions of
horror and what my group and I would like to accomplish for our final task! The elements simile has in which my group based our movie idea on includes; dramatic exposition and sound, props such as knifes and guns, the different camera angles to draw and create suspense for the viewer. This movie creates an infinite amount of jump scares, visuals and sounds designated to entice and scare its audience. All things in which I hope to achieve in my final task. The elements this movie had in which I throughly enjoyed was the fact it told a story. It was well filmed and edited to attract the viewer and get them to not look away. I am not a person who particularly loves to watch horror movies so I liked the fact there was some humor to it. However, in f

Genre Decision

Image
Hey there! After careful consideration and research my group and I have come up with three different genres in which we researched. This included horror, thriller and comedy.  1) Horror: This specific genre appealed to my group particularly as our movie idea for the final task is about a group of teenagers sneaking around a local abandoned house when suddenly they are locked in and only have one way out. As researched horror uses a build up of intense music, pale bloody make up, doors creaking and lots of other sound effects to get you on the "edge of your seats."We would be able to include the different props such as chainsaws, guns and knives as well as the dim and dark lighting you would normally see in a horror films. The reason this theme would fit particularly well is we would be able to follow majority of the conventions and code of horror as our main idea is meant to convey a sense of drama, scare, unknown and excitement.  2) Thriller: Again similar to horror this g

Genre Research: Comedy

Image
Another Genre I am researching is Comedy. The comedy genre is used to make audiences laugh. Comedy is meant to be light-hearted and can be enjoyed by a wide range of age groups. For the comedy genre, there are a lot of common camera angles, movements, and shots. One example of a very common camera movement would be when the director decides to zoom in extremely close for comedic effect. This movement isn't like a normal zoom, which usually shows emotions and dramatics, but is an extreme close-up that just keeps going. An example of an angle used in the comedy genre is a panning/tracking shot. A lot of the time this helps add to comedic effect as it helps viewers see what the actor is doing. The common mis-en-scene for comedy is bright and cheery lighting with props and makeup that follow this aesthetic. The main purpose of a comedy movie is to make its audience laugh, so by making the visuals and props easy going like the script, it'll help achieve the purpose. The props are us

Genre Research: Thriller

Image
Another genre I'm researching is thriller. Though similar to horror, thrillers are often meant to invoke a suspense feeling of what’s to come next while horror is more for the scare factor. For thriller, the common camera angels used are high angels. Many are done very slowly to also add to the uneasiness. A Birds eye view is a good movement option for making a character feel powerless and vulnerable which is common in thrillers. Close ups and extreme closeups are best used in showing a characters distress. With this, it sets the audiences moods and builds an effective tension. With costumes and makeup, minimal is always best in helping to keep the scenario real and the characters more relatable. This in turn makes the audience more scared because it’s more real. Low lighting creates a sense a fear and unknowing ness of to what’s come next. Depending on the scene a slow or fast paceed tiring will be used. In thrillers there’s always an intense moment and a calm moment and no in bet

Genre Research: Horror

Image
One genre I am researching is the horror genre. The horror genre is used in order to frighten or scare the viewer. A common camera angle used in horror films is the dutch angle. This is used in order to provide a surreal or nightmare effect to the shot. Another angle commonly used is the high angle to show the character is powerless and vulnerable in that situation. Tracking or panning shots are also regularly used in horror films. This is used to emphasize the movement of the character running from something or being watched and or followed. Typical Mis-En-Scene found in a horror film would be dark lighting or very monotone lighting. Also a suspicious setting such as an abandoned house or hotel is usually found in horror films. These are used to increase the suspense and builds a scary setting. They also may include weapons such as, knives, chainsaws, guns, etc. Makeup used in horror films frequently include, pale bloody makeup or scary effects like scars to make the viewers afraid. T

Our Pitch

Image
Pitch 1:  A group of teenagers sneak into the abounded house on the block but they get locked is there a way out? Who’s going to make it out alive?  Pitch 2:  After the all star athlete Cameron Taylor is set on playing soccer at LSU things change for the worst. Will she be able to play again?  The reason my group and I thought to choose this pitch is because of the drama that it will cause. This story line is extremely eye catching, easily drawing people to watch and to stay interested. This will also be a good fit for our group as all of our actors are teenagers. The roles are all set to be teenage kids so, our roles in the movie intro will fit perfectly. This pitch idea could be hard to film however, due to the location. We would need to find a good place for us to film that looks as similar as possible to a scary house room. The reason my group chose this pitch is because we are all athletes that fear this struggle. The plot is very interesting to those in the athletic world and w

Switching the Group Up?

Image
Don’t worry, the group didn’t totally break up we only had one member leave and a new one join. For this project I have decided to change my group slightly. My group mate Sarah decided she wanted to work with another group. So,I asked my new friend to work with me instead. I have chosen to work with Sabrina, Michaela, and Olivia. Olivia is the newest member we added to the group this time. Olivia just moved here from Turks and Caicos and is a teammate of mine on my soccer team. We hit it off right when we met each other and I knew right when she told me she had this class her and I would be group mates. Olivia is also really good with technology and loves to film. This skill is super important since we just lost our camera man. This also eliminates the stress of picking positions since she falls into the roll of the spot we were missing. I am also ecstatic about continuing working with my old group mates Sabrina and Michaela. Sabrina was very helpful creating ideas, gathering the props

I’m Back Again!

Image
Hey, it’s me Lola again. I’m so excited to be doing this final project. I had so much fun with the last two and this one sounds even better. I put in so much time and creativity into the last two projects and I want this one to be the best of them, by far. I’ve always loved watching movies and learning about the directors story behind them. I enjoy coming up with my own movie ideas for fun so, I can’t wait to get this project started. My editing is so much better as well since the beginning of this class. The new effects and transitions I’ve learned how to do will be cool to use in this project. I can’t wait to use those skills plus my creativity to make an awesome introduction to a movie. Anyway a little more to learn about me again is that I am extremely dedicated to soccer. We actually just won the district championship and are moving on to regionals. Even though it’s going to be tuff balancing school and soccer I’m so happy I get to be apart of both. I also am still working at a
