Title Research: Slender Man

Hey there, it’s me again. I chose the film Slender Man because it showed a lot of good horror genre strategies in the opening sequence. Using the www.artofthetitle.com I came across plenty of films and easy to access research.

  1. What titles are displayed during the opening sequences?

- In the opening sequence, we can first see the studio and company making the movie. We see first “Sony”, then it transitions to “Screen Gems” which is owned by Sony and finally “Mythology Entertainment”.

2. What images are prioritized in the opening sequence?

- In the opening scene it’s kept a black screen. This image though plain, fits with Slender man since he is a mysterious man who lurks in the dark. With no image present it intensifies that

3.What connotations do these images carry?

- The connotation over all is negative. It’s giving a scary and eery vibe because you don’t know what to expect. The lack of image is scary in itself.

4. How does the film establish a feeling of the genre from the outset?

- The genre is established with the use of music. Since we aren’t looking at anything , our sense of hearing is heightened. The fear of the unknown is bestowed.

5.What strategies are used to ensure the film appeals to its target audience?

- The opening scene ends off when the music crescendos and stops. It’s from there the movie begins with the actual plot. Keeping the first scene and opening scene separate adds to the sense of horror and fear.

6.How has technology been used effectively? You want to consider camera angles, transitions and editing techniques.

- Through the use of editing , many swifty and subtle transitions are made . After the standard production logos are out of the way, the names subtly fade in and out. Text done in white to make it pop against the white and the title slowly revealing itself at the end.
