Genre Decision
Hey there! After careful consideration and research my group and I have come up with three different genres in which we researched. This included horror, thriller and comedy.
1) Horror: This specific genre appealed to my group particularly as our movie idea for the final task is about a group of teenagers sneaking around a local abandoned house when suddenly they are locked in and only have one way out. As researched horror uses a build up of intense music, pale bloody make up, doors creaking and lots of other sound effects to get you on the "edge of your seats."We would be able to include the different props such as chainsaws, guns and knives as well as the dim and dark lighting you would normally see in a horror films. The reason this theme would fit particularly well is we would be able to follow majority of the conventions and code of horror as our main idea is meant to convey a sense of drama, scare, unknown and excitement.
2) Thriller: Again similar to horror this genre worked very well with our movie idea. Thriller makes you feel at an unease, something bad is about to happen. It's main purpose is to"evoke a suspense feeling." The use of slow camera angles and no sound emphasizes this effect. This would work very well with our project in the sense of being able to build up that something wrong is about to happen, the group of teenagers are trapped with only one way out. It already introduces a problem which is what thriller is all about!
3) Comedy: This genre is quite a bit different to both of previous genres researched. It is meant to create as sense of joy and laughter. It allows the viewer of the film to have a good time and relax to a film which makes them laugh. There is no jump scare and it doesn't keep the on the "edge of their seats" or "evoke a suspense feeling." It has a light and humorous effect on the viewer. However, not all comedy's are like that, some have a gory and horror side to it which is why this genre is able to work well with the idea we came up with.
After all that has been researched my group and I came to the conclusion that horror would best be suited for our movie idea. It is easy to include the sound effects, props, lighting as they are all easy to create and gather, since I am a student and have do not have money invested in this project this was the best way to genre to go with. The other genres for example comedy would not work as well as it very hard to connect both intense drama and suspense with laughter and joy. Thriller is very similar to horror so it was a hard decision but overall horror was going to be our greatest success in being able to follow all the conventions/codes in order to make this the best project it can be!
Have great day and see you next time!
