Critical Reflection

Critical Reflection: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Q0KIOz_cfxanssSSrk5sqRoVwpFibTUpRw-OJqRV1_s/edit?usp=sharing 1. My products represent multiple social groups and issues. First, the main actor in our movie is in a fatal car crash. Although in the film we are not able to see why the boy gets into the crash it represents the wide issue of texting and driving, drunk driving, and more which are some of the main causes of death worldwide. The boy dying in the end shows that car crashes, while sometimes minor, are a huge problem and can result in injury or even death. By highlighting this aspect we are raising the awareness that no one should drive under the influence or pay attention to distractions such as their phone as something can always go wrong. At the end of our film, we want people to be aware that driving with any sort of distraction in place is irresponsible and should never be done no matter what. My product also represents the gay community. Many films are trying to inco...

I had so much fun being in the AICE Media Studies class for two years in a row. This film was so amazing to make and I had a blast. I'm so sad to be saying goodbye to this class. I hope to continue filming later on. Thank you for everything, peace out!

My Dad Peer Reviewed My Film

Image
Hey, it’s me again back at it. I had my dad watch my short film to get an outside perspective. I have watched the film so many times while editing and re-filming that I needed a fresh mind to watch and check for any errors. My dad was first of all very shocked by the editing my group and I did. He said it looked pretty smooth and very professional. I told him that we used iMovie and showed him a few of the features we used to edit our film. He said that the use of iMovie for editing really added to the realism of the film especially the audio we added. My group and I used car crash noises and music to make the film better. All of the music was a free download that I got permission to use. My dad also liked how easy to read the titles were at the beginning. He thought they were fun and looked very creative. Although my dad did really enjoy the film he did have a few things that he recommended we fixed. He thought that a few of our shots didn’t fit in where we had placed them so he...

Finished Editing!

Image
Hi, it’s me again back at it. My group and I are on to the editing process to make our film finally come together. I am not the biggest fan of editing. It is by far the most difficult part of the short film process for me. I never know which program to use or what transitions to include where. I have gotten a lot better at editing though, so I contributed a lot this time around. The first thing I did was put the clips into iMovie so I was able to get them in order. I had already had some scenes in there so I just added the rest to see the clips all together. Seeing the movie unedited was a little weird but it was pretty cool to see it seamlessly rather than just viewing the individual clips. Seeing the clips also helped me see a few things I wanted to change. My group and I were luckily all together so we could reshoot the few scenes that didn’t fit right. I then added in black screens that took the place of scenes like the car crash scene. I also added the transitions using iMov...

Finally Done Filming!

Image
Hey again, it's me back at it. My group and I FINALLY finished filming our short film. We only had a little bit left to film after the last time we met but we haven't been able to meet since. I have had to delay our meeting multiple times but I finally was able to meet and so was the rest of my group. My group and I met up at my house like usual to complete the last scenes. All we had to film was the few scenes that took place at my house after he got back from the mall and the hospital scene. The first few scenes were super simple to film. I got to both film and act today as I was in one or two of the scenes. I love the change from filming to acting as it was something different and fun. I changed a few scenes as we filmed them because I felt they were a bit cheesy. I also voted to re-film a few scenes because of the awkward camera angles we had chosen to use. Although, I changed a lot that we had planned to do it still went by pretty quickly. The hospital scene was more diff...

No Surprise, Another Delay

Image
Hey, it's me again back at it! Of course, my group and I were not able to meet up to finish our film. We are only one more filming session away from finishing our film. I am so excited to get to edit so I can see this whole film really come together. Sadly, my group and I were too busy to meet up this weekend. My groupmates Jack and Samantha both had work and sports to do so they were too busy to film. I was also too busy all weekend to meet. On Saturday, my family came to town last minute including one of my cousins I had never met before. I had a lot of fun meeting some of my family. We went to lunch and the beach because they are from Colorado so, they don't go to the beach very often. It was a very long day but I had a lot of fun. On Sunday, I had two soccer games scheduled last minute in Miami. Miami is over an hour away from my house so, it took the day to travel there, play both games, and come all the way back. I have been super busy with soccer making it really diffi...

Postcard and More Filming!

Image
Hey, it's me again back at it. I have been really working on the postcard as my group and I already have finished making the website. Although we are done with the website, we are still working on the socials. Right now I am working on using a QR code generator to make one to put on our postcard. This QR code is going to link to our Instagram account so people can access our account through the postcard and learn more about our film. I am also creating dates and times for our short film to premiere at the independent movie theater. I decided that our postcard background could be an image of our main actor in a car as that is what our film is all about. I think that by doing this we will better represent our film and draw people into watching it. My group and I have all been extremely busy with school and practice as we are all student-athletes. I have especially been busy because travel soccer just started back up so I am back playing 5-6 days a week. Each time we film we can usu...

Filming, Filming and more Filming!

Image
Hey, it’s me again back at it. My group and I have continued to film more this week and we got a lot done. I again had everyone meet up at my house so we could film the scenes taking place there and get them out of the way. Everyone was busy during the day so we had to meet up later at night. I had practice and work during the day so we weren’t able to meet up until it was turning dark out. Because of this, we were not able to film any of the scenes that take place outside as it needs to be light out to film those. Before everyone got to my house I had made sure I made sure I had snacks and drinks to get us through the night of filming. I have been directing and filming for most of this movie but today I finally got to act a little. I am a bit shy in front of the camera but I have gotten used to it from the past films. I have always been one of the main actors in my films so I knew what I was doing and how to act. I do like filming better but acting for a change this film was ver...

Our Film is Coming Along!

Image
Hey, it's me again back at it! My group and I have made some major progress on the filming process. Since I had to cut the last filming day short because I had work I recommended that we meet sometime over the weekend. We finally were able to meet and get some of the scenes filmed. I have already directed and filmed most of the opening scenes for the opening and beginning scenes of the short film. This time I was able to film the grocery store scenes and the following scenes that take place at my house. I had everyone meet at my house before I drove everyone to the Winn Dixie by my house. We only had a few scenes to film in the store so it didn't take too long to get them all filmed. A few people did come up to me to question what my group and I were doing. They were concerned about us filming in their store but soon after I had a conversation with the workers, they gave me permission to continue what we were doing. I tried to film as best as possible and quick as possible so ...

Filmed The Opening Scene

Image
Hey, it’s me again back at it. Finally, my group and I were able to start filming our short film. Due to our recent delay in filming due to weather we rescheduled filming to today. I had everyone meet at my house at 3:30 with all of the props we would need for the first few scenes. One everyone got to my house I drove everyone to the empty street in my neighborhood where we could film the opening car scene. I was directing and filming this scene as my group mate Jack drove the car. The first scene was slightly difficult to film for me. I had to film a panning shot of the car and it was hard to time my filming with my group mates driving. Instead I suggested we show a wide shot of the car to show he is driving. Then I thought we should have our group mate sitting inside the car with a POV shot of what he’s seeing while driving. This plan was much easier to film and it in the end looked much better. It didn’t take long to film the rest of the first few scenes. This is because most ...

Rainy Day = A No Film Day

Image
Hey it’s me again! It’s probably no surprise that my groups filming was delayed. The horrible weather made it impossible to meet. Today we were supposed to start the filming process but due to the unforeseen weather interruptions we couldn’t meet. My parents along with my other group mates thought it would be unsafe for us to drive in the hurricane type weather to start filming. We were planning on filming the opening scene with takes place in the car so, this was definitely the safe call. I am upset since it was the one day we could all meet and we are all always so busy it’s hard to make time. Luckily we had a backup day planned just in case this happened. My group and I are now planning on filming a few days from now and the weather app looks great. You can never really trust Florida weather though! Even though filming was a bust, my group and I got some stuff done virtually over the phone. I FaceTimed everyone and started to work on the website a little more. I have set up a I...

We started the filming process!

Image
Hey I’m back! My group and I finally were able to meet up and figure out the roles we will be playing in the short film process. Since this short film will partially take place in a hospital setting, we are going to need to get a lot of props. I was put in charge of finding the hospital like props to heighten the reality of the short film. Luckily, I am very close friends with someone whose dad is an orthopedic surgeon. He said that he would help me get some hospital sheets and a few hospital like props that he finds lying around his office. This will greatly help the setting feel like a real hospital. Other props I am in charge of getting is shopping bags and glasses for the scenes that take place in the middle of the film. I am also the one whose car we are using in the initial car accident scene and whose car we are using to get to all of the other settings. I have already planned a vacant road to film the car accident scene on and made sure to follow every safety pro-caution t...

Storyboarding My Way Through This Short Film!

Image
In scenes 1-6 we will be using just a black screen or dark screen to start off the short film. It will have all of the titles throughout them. Scene 1 with have the name of the studio title. Scene 2 will have the name of production title. Scene 3,4, and 5 will all have the actors names titles on them. Scene 6 has the name of the film.  Scenes 7-9 will also be dark screens with titles on it. Scene 7 has the music by title. Scene 8 has the edited by title, and scene 9 has the directed by title which is the last title before going into the actual movie.  In scene 10 we will shoot the main character getting out of the car. For this scene we will use a wide angle to show the boy getting out of the car and the background of where is at/The location of this will be on my street. In scene 11 we will use a medium shot to show the boy and the guy who hit him having a discussion about what’s happening. The location will still be on the street.  In scene 12 we will use a close up sho...

Plan it and Then we Film it!

Image
Hey there! My group and I have started the planning process for how we are going to film our short film.  Schedule: Days to Film-  Saturday 2/3, Saturday 2/10, Saturday 2/17 (if necessary) Times to film on each Saturday- 11:30 am to 4:00 The dates are Saturdays that we should all be open and able to film on during hours where the sun is up, since all of our scenes are in daylight. If we finish filming on schedule there would be almost a month (2/18-3/15) for us to edit and make any changes or re-film. Film Location: We are planning on filming at my House/Street to film during the day scenes of main character at home and the car accident. We also want to film at the Galleria Mall to capture footage of the main character going throughout their day. This is a local mall near all of the participating people. Finally we plan to use my room to film hospital scenes in. We can set up her bed to look hospital like and easily all meet up there.  Participants: Samantha Price, Lola M...

Short Film Research: A Women of No Importance/Drama

Image
Hey there! Another short film I researched was A Women of No Importance. This film was about an undocumented single mother who has has a hard life and finally takes control of it. Her store manager overworks her and blackmails her until she is able to blackmail him back. This short film is only seven minutes long however it tells a very real and dramatic story incorporating many common things found it drama films. The film sparks so many emotions starting from sad to mad and to proud while also leaving an uneasy feeling at the end. Many dramas end in a way you don’t want or expect them to as this short film did. In this film unlike the others I researched had much less dialogue and more digestive sound such a car noises and people. This was to show how the woman felt weak in the society she was living in and didn’t have anything to say. There was also many camera angles and shots that are found in drama films. For example there were many closeups on the women’s face showing when s...

Short Film Research: Push to Enter/Drama

Image
Hello! Continuing my research of short films, I decided to watch the short: Push to Enter by Anthony Nicolau. This short is a mere 11 minutes, but in those 11 minutes the story and emotions portrayed on screen take viewers on a relatable journey. The film is about a delivery man going through the monotony of day to day work and interacting with rude people. He is given an opportunity to better his life when he discovers keys a customer has left in their door, but could he betray his morals? This journey of morality and desperation both the main character and viewer go on display the talents of director and creator Nicolau. With intense shots showing the main character's intrusive thoughts the audience is truly shown rather than told about the internal battles the character is battling. Internal battles are a large theme in drama films as it often relatable to real people, which arises emotion in viewers. Like in this film for example, struggles with morality because of desperatio...

Short Film Research: Traitor Knight/Drama

Image
Hey there! The first short film I researched was a drama called Traitor Knight. This short film is set at a college fraternity house. In this film a brother in the house almost killed a student by making the student due a pledge task.  The student is in the hospital after falling off the roof of the frat house.  With the fate of the house and their college careers at stake, frat brother will turn on brother. This film uses many common conventions found in other drama films which makes it a drama.  A common sound used in this film were diegetic sound. For example, this film used diegetic sounds when Hunter was throwing things to make the scene more dramatic and intriguing to the audience. The use of diegetic sounds in this film helps add more exaggerated effects on the characters emotions. They also incorporate a lot of intense dialogue. For example, Hunter, the boy who gave the pledge task to another guy, got very upset when he found out he was kicked off the frater...

Short film research: Mutt/ Drama

Image
Hey there! A short film I watched and researched in the drama genre was the film Mutt. This short film was very straightforward. Although the short film is only 13 minutes, it still grabs the audience's emotional side and tells an in-depth story. The plot is on addiction which is a well-known topic to everyone. The topic can be related to real-world problems people face all of the time. The short film is based on a man who is an alcoholic and his family is trying to convince him to go to rehab. The short film is a drama which is clear from the acting, sounds, editing, etc.  The common sound used in this film was diegetic sound and dialogue like yelling. The use of diegetic sounds helps to add more emphasis on some of the character's physical state.  For example, as Micheal, the alcoholic, is drinking the juice, the effect of hearing the big gulps help to show that he may be an alcoholic. It adds a more exaggerated effect to the scene. The dialogue in this short film is a...

How to Make a Short Film

Image
The video "How to make a short film" by film riot will act as a helpful tool. This video gives our group a good sense of what well need to do in creating our short film. Most of this is in the preparation and setup that allows the story to come through within the short amount of time. It says not to write something that wont fit the resources that are available to us. Our short film should be written having in mind the actors as well as the access to equipment we have. We would not be able to perform huge cgi shots or anything from the sky as we don't have the equipment for it and we should plan accordingly. Another important aspect of the film that we should focus on is tone. The video goes over tone as it relates to camera positioning as well as lighting and setting. The tone should be appropriate throughout or else it will lose legitimacy. as for the casting when it comes to this video it says to make sure to get out of them what is needed and we will have to take t...

Comparing 9, the short, and 9,the full-length movie

Image
The short film "9" provides a brief yet captivating glimpse into a mysterious post-apocalyptic world, introducing viewers to ragdoll-like creatures surviving in desolation. 9, the protagonist, navigates this dangerous landscape, and the narrative is marked by brevity and a sense of enigma, leaving much to the audience's interpretation.  In contrast, the full-length film "9" expands upon the foundation laid by the short. It delves into a more elaborate and detailed backstory, exploring the origins of the robotic creatures and intertwining themes of creation, responsibility, and the consequences of technology. The extended runtime allows for a deeper exploration of the characters and their interconnected stories. Character development in the short film is minimal, focusing on 9's survival instincts with limited insight into his background. The full-length film, however, provides a canvas for more profound character exploration. Motivations, fears, and relati...
