Genre Research: Thriller

Another genre I'm researching is thriller. Though similar to horror, thrillers are often meant to invoke a suspense feeling of what’s to come next while horror is more for the scare factor. For thriller, the common camera angels used are high angels. Many are done very slowly to also add to the uneasiness. A Birds eye view is a good movement option for making a character feel powerless and vulnerable which is common in thrillers. Close ups and extreme closeups are best used in showing a characters distress. With this, it sets the audiences moods and builds an effective tension. With costumes and makeup, minimal is always best in helping to keep the scenario real and the characters more relatable. This in turn makes the audience more scared because it’s more real. Low lighting creates a sense a fear and unknowing ness of to what’s come next. Depending on the scene a slow or fast paceed tiring will be used. In thrillers there’s always an intense moment and a calm moment and no in between. This also adds to tension and suspense for the audience. Sound may be most effective in creating and setting the tone of the thriller. With a musical shift between scenes makes them more intense and edging when watching; keeping you on the edge of your seat. Even the use of no sound, quietness. This keeps you on edge as you don’t know what’s to come next. Some thriller movie examples are The Black Phone. This movie came out in 2021, it’s about a young boy who’s being held hostage hears a disconnected phone ringing. On the other line is the voices of those his kidnapper has murdered. While it’s not explicitly scary, it does invoke that unease and offsetting feeling while watching. This is achieved not only through plot and storyline but the use of high angels, realistic/ natural makeup ( natural to the setting ex. dirt or blood based on surroundings ), sounds and editing. All together this can be achieved.
