Genre Research: Comedy
Another genre I am researching is Comedy. The comedy genre is used to make audiences laugh. Comedy is meant to be light-hearted and can be enjoyed by a wide range of age groups. For the comedy genre, there are a lot of common camera angles, movements, and shots. One example of a very common camera movement would be when the director decides to zoom in extremely close for comedic effect. This movement isn't like a normal zoom, which usually shows emotions and dramatics, but is an extreme close-up that just keeps going. An example of an angle used in the comedy genre is a panning/tracking shot. A lot of the time this helps add to comedic effect as it helps viewers see what the actor is doing. The common mis-en-scene for comedy is bright and cheery lighting with props and makeup that follow this aesthetic. The main purpose of a comedy movie is to make its audience laugh, so by making the visuals and props easy going like the script, it'll help achieve the purpose. The props are usually bright colors like yellow, orange, pink, baby blue, and more. The common editing in the comedy genre is transitions. There are a lot of transitions used for comedic effect in this genre. A lot of the time the director would switch from one scene to another to show something the viewers know but the characters do not. The common sound in comedy is a lot of upbeat and positive soundtracks. The sound usually follows along with whatever is going on in the film. Two good examples of movies in the comedy genre would be The Mask and Mary Poppins. These movies were bright and had upbeat soundtracks that made the movies light-hearted. Comedy has a lot of elements that I like, for example, the fact that you can have fun with filming and that it can be playful. However, I do not like that comedy does not have much dramatic suspense. I also think creating a comedy would be very difficult since it may be hard to appeal to everyone's sense of humor. Not everyone is going to think something is funny and I think that would be very hard to nail.
